Plus quam 2000 specierum in fere 200 generibus

Arecaceae, olim Palmaceae,[2] sunt familia plantarum florentium ordinis Arecalium. Cui sunt fere 202 genera et 2600 species, plurimae in zonis tropica et subtropica, et fortasse calidis climatibus temperatis. Plurimae Arecaceae foliis magnis, multiplicibus sempervirentibus, in summo cauli non ramificanti distinguuntur; multae autem alias proprietates habent, et miram corporis diversitatem praebent. Praeter diversitatem morphologicam, Arecaceae paene omne climatum genus intra eorum distributionem naturalem habitant, a silvis pluvialibus ad deserta sicca.


In multis culturis, palmae fuerunt signa victoriae, pacis, fertilitatis, aliarumque notionum. Hodie, palmae sunt signum tropicarum et feriarum populo gratum.[3]
