Writing data to cloud firestore with promises
I'm building a timer app that saves timing sessions to cloud firestore. I would like to record each session to the firestore as a record, and then any splits during the timing session as child elements of this session.
const db = firebase.firestore();
const settings = {timestampsInSnapshots: true};
db.settings(settings);
const sessionsRef = db.collection("sessions")
const user = firebase.auth().currentUser;
The first write is initiated in the startStop() function:
startStop() {
const status = this.state.running;
if(!this.state.sessionRef) //first time starting timer, record new database entry
{
console.log("writing session to cloudstore")
const user = firebase.auth().currentUser;
const sessionRef = sessionsRef.add({
start_time: firebase.firestore.FieldValue.serverTimestamp(),
user: user.uid,
goal: this.state.goal,
}).then( () =>{
console.log("Write successful");
console.log(sessionRef)
this.setState({sessionRef: sessionRef});
return sessionRef;
}
);
}
else //need log split in firebase
{
const sessionRef = this.state.sessionRef
console.log(sessionRef.id)
const action = (this.state.running ? "stop":"start");
const splitRef = sessionsRef.doc(sessionRef.id).push({
split_time: firebase.firestore.FieldValue.serverTimestamp(),
action: action
})
}
The problem happens when pressing the split button that calls the stopStop() function after the timer starts running. In this case, the following error:
FirebaseError: Function CollectionReference.doc() requires its first argument to be of type non-empty string, but it was: undefined
I think this must have something to do with the promise in the first write call not being properly resolved, but I haven't figured out how to do this from reading lots of references and documentation.
