Difference between a RESTful POST endpoint and a webhook
I've have a RESTful Ruby on Rails API that, among other things, handles incoming data from a piece of hardware I created. The hardware is internet connected, and it collects data and POSTs it to my readings
endpoint, where new readings records are created in my cloud DB.
I'm now trying to integrate some third party hardware with this API, and I'm seeing this is typically done using webhooks. And there seems to be a lot of fanfare and specific articles about the concept of a webhoook-- what it is, how to implement it, how it's different from an API, etc. But from where I'm standing, I can't see how the webhook is any different than the RESTful endpoint that I already have for readings
. If I give the third party services that URL, my assumption is that they will parameterize their data and POST it to that endpoint, just as I have been doing with my own hardware. In my case, will my webhook and RESTful endpoint be one in the same? Is this just a conceptual/ nomenclature difference?

Webhooks are usually implemented as POST requests, as you've suggested. Webhook simply means that a servics pushes (posts) you a message rather than you having to poll an api all the time.
